Hourly rate calculator (cost-based)

The cost-based method starts from the real cost of one labour hour, then adds your overheads and your margin. You get the rate to bill so you never work at a loss.

Hourly rate to bill

40.97 €/h

Hourly cost (cost-based)31.03 €/hOverheads +20 %Target margin +10 %

Hourly cost = annual loaded salary ÷ productive hours. In construction these hours rarely exceed 1,450 out of the 1,607 legal hours, once leave, bad weather and travel are removed. Overheads are then applied, followed by your margin, to reach the selling price.

Job margin calculator

Compare what you billed against what the job cost you. You get the gross margin in euros and the margin rate as a percentage: the two numbers that tell you whether the job was worth it.

Margin rate

10 %25 %

Gross margin : 14,000

Gross margin = amount billed − expenses. Margin rate = gross margin ÷ amount billed × 100. This is the exact calculation Constrigo runs on every project, matching your accepted quotes against your purchase invoices.

Frequently asked questions

In short

These free calculators estimate your hourly rate, your cost price, your project margin and your VAT using transparent construction formulas. They're for simulating before you start; no sign-up is required and your accountant stays the reference for your tax situation.

Take your worker's annual loaded salary and divide it by the hours actually worked on site (often around 1,450 a year). That gives the cost of one hour. Then add your overheads and the margin you want: that's the rate to bill.

The hourly cost is what one hour of work really costs you before margin: wages, social charges, and sometimes small tools and consumables. It isn't your selling price; it's the floor below which you lose money.

Subtract your expenses from the amount billed: that's the gross margin in euros. Divide that margin by the amount billed and multiply by 100 for the margin rate. Example: €50,000 billed, €38,000 spent — €12,000 margin and a 24% rate.

Gross margin is an amount in euros: what's left once expenses are paid. The margin rate is that same amount expressed as a percentage of revenue. Two jobs can both leave €10,000 of margin; the one that earns it on smaller revenue has the better rate.

In construction, around 1,450 productive hours are typically counted out of the 1,607 annual legal hours. The difference covers paid leave, public holidays, bad-weather days and travel time not billed to a job. Using 1,607 hours in your calculation understates your real hourly cost and risks pricing too low.

In France, renovation work on residential buildings more than two years old is subject to a reduced VAT rate of 10% (or 5.5% for certain energy-improvement works). Work on new residential or commercial buildings is taxed at 20%. Constrigo lets you set the rate line by line on your quote: useful when a single job mixes work qualifying for the reduced rate with work at the standard rate. This calculator does not validate your tax position — your accountant remains the reference.

Yes. Constrigo continuously matches each project's invoiced amount against the expenses you've recorded — purchases, subcontracting, labour. The formula is the same as this calculator: gross margin = revenue billed − expenses, margin rate = gross margin ÷ revenue. You see the margin in real time on each job, without exporting anything to a spreadsheet. The calculator on this page lets you simulate before you start; Constrigo does it as a live tracker while the job is running.
