In short

An issued invoice can no longer be edited: correct it with a credit note, even if it has already been paid. The credit note gets a number linked to the invoice.

In brief

Open the invoice, then in the “Payments & Credit Notes” card click “Credit note”. Enter the amount and the reason, then click “Create credit note”. On an unpaid invoice, the amount cannot exceed the remaining balance; on a paid invoice, it is used to refund the customer. The credit note gets a number such as AV-FAC-2026-000001-1.

Why issue a credit note?

An issued invoice (sent, paid, overdue or cancelled) is locked: its lines can no longer be edited. To correct a billing error, grant a commercial discount after the fact or refund a customer who has already paid, you issue a credit note attached to the invoice. A cancelled invoice cannot receive a credit note.

On the web

  1. Open the relevant invoice (sent, overdue or paid).
  2. In the “Payments & Credit Notes” card, click “Credit note”. The button is also available on a paid invoice.
  3. In the “Create a credit note” window, enter the “Amount *”. The maximum is shown in the field: the remaining balance on an unpaid invoice, or the amount paid minus the credit notes already issued on a paid invoice.
  4. Fill in the “Reason *”, for example “Quantity error on the tiling line”.
  5. Click “Create credit note”.

The credit note appears in the invoice’s “Issued credit notes” table, with its PDF available to download. All your credit notes are also listed in the “Credit notes” tab of the Invoices page, starting with the Artisan plan.

If the invoice was paid online through Stripe, tick “Refund via Stripe”: the button becomes “Create credit note and refund” and the amount is refunded to the customer’s payment method.

On the mobile app

  1. Open the invoice (sent or overdue).
  2. In the menu, tap “Create a credit note”.
  3. Enter the “Credit note amount” and the “Reason”, then tap “Create credit note”.

The “Issued credit notes” screen, accessible from the invoice list, gathers all the credit notes created. A credit note on an invoice that has already been paid is created from the web.

Credit note, cancellation and e-invoicing

  • A credit note reduces the invoice’s remaining balance. It does not change its status. An invoice fully covered by credit notes no longer becomes overdue and is no longer sent reminders.
  • To fully cancel an invoice that has not been transmitted by the e-invoicing platform, click “Edit”, set the status to “Cancelled”, save, then confirm “Cancel the invoice”.
  • An invoice transmitted by the platform can no longer be edited or cancelled. Its credit note is sent automatically to the platform: the message “Credit note transmitted to the e-invoicing platform” confirms it.

For a transmitted invoice, the credit note amount may be rounded down to the nearest cent so that VAT comes out exact for each rate. The confirmation message indicates this.

Going further

  • Track the remaining balance: see “Record a payment on an invoice”.
  • Understand how credit notes are transmitted: see “E-invoicing 2026 with Constrigo”.
